Girls’ Engineering Exploration (GEE) is a full day event that allows girls in 4th-8th grade an opportunity to meet female engineers and be exposed to exciting career paths through interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities. The girls will be able to experience the creativity, innovation, and fun that goes on in the field of engineering. The event is FREE for registered students, parents, and teachers! This year’s GEE is back IN PERSON and outdoors on Saturday, June 4th at Wayne State University. The GEE committee chairs (Sabrina Ridenour, Sam Poeppelman, and Sheila DeLapp) can be reached at SWEDetroitGEE@gmail.com with any questions. What: SWENext Overview Training hosted by the Society Outreach Committee - This training session will provide an overview of SWENext Clubs, explore how different types of adult advocates can best support students, and identify useful resources. The first half of the session will feature general information about and best practices for interacting with and supporting SWENext Clubs, while the second half of the presentation will include two breakout rooms that will go into more depth on the roles of different types of adult advocates. This session is recommended for all types of adult advocates that are interested in working with SWENexters and SWENext Clubs, or are parents of a SWENexter!

May 17th - “What is STEM?” - offered for middle schoolers May 19th - “Pursuing STEM” – offered for high schoolers This event aims to create STEM awareness to Latina middle-schoolers and encourage high-schoolers to see their own STEM future! We’ll achieve this by providing a hands-on interactive STEM activity from KiwiCo, a panel of college and professional female engineers to help them understand the feasibility of pursuing a college degree, and a keynote speaker whom is part of an amazing NASA mission of returning astronauts to the moon... including the first female astronaut to step foot on the moon! In addition, parents are highly encouraged to attend and learn about college financial aid opportunities. The financial aid session for parents will be offered in both English and Spanish. We would love to have students take advantage of this free event hosted by SHPE Region 6. English Sign-up Spanish Sign-up Reach out to r6ndc@outlook.com with any questions. What: Sustaining the Spark of STEM Interest in Middle School Aged Students brought to you by the Society Outreach Committee. By middle school (girls ages 10-14), girls tend to lose confidence in their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related abilities, which greatly reduces their likelihood of pursuing a STEM career. The loss of confidence has nothing to do with their innate capabilities, but with the social barriers girls and non-binary individuals face from a young age. Middle School is a vulnerable time when individuals begin to forge their own paths, which gives Adult Advocates a unique opportunity to ignite and sustain an interest in STEM. Adult advocates will learn how to combat the fear of failure, social stigmas, and gender biases through the power of creating a supportive learning environment, forming connections, and sharing experiences.

At this year's summit, we are hoping to foster an open dialogue about diversity and inclusion on the U-M campus through a series of “lightning talks”. These “lightning talks” are about 15 minutes in length each and will focus on how diversity and inclusion play into the experience of student organizations and project teams.
If you are interested in showcasing a specific DEI initiative you are working towards and participate in these conversations to learn best practices from other students and identify potential opportunities for collaboration, please sign up here. You can view past presentations here. The summit will take place on January 17th, 2022, at 3:00pm-5:00pm in 1013 DOW. Please contact swe.eboard@umich.edu with any questions. |
